Property insurance adjuster

Insurance adjusters investigate insurance claims and determine the amount of loss or damages covered by insurance policies. They are employed in claims departments of insurance companies or as independent adjusters. Insurance claims examiners examine claims investigated by insurance adjusters and authorize payments. They are employed at head offices or branches of insurance companies. They often referred to in house or field adjusters. Some companies use staff adjuster while others use a company to handle claims.

Adjusters work alone most of the time, except during training when they work under close supervision. They may work primarily in an office environment writing reports and making phone calls, or often work away from the office interviewing people and gathering evidence. Depending on the nature of the claims they handle, adjusters may have to do a significant amount of travelling to inspect damage and interview claimants, witnesses and police officers. Having to defend their decisions in mediation, settlement conferences and mini-trials can be stressful.
